* Gardeners grow monarda as an ornamental plant, and many do not even know that if you hurt your hand, you can help yourself right there, near the beds: crush a monarda leaf and apply it to the wound for a while or treat it with juice. And in summer and autumn, during the canning period, it is good to put shoots of this plant in a jar, thus preventing spoilage of the product.
How can these properties of monarda be explained?
Its main feature, determining its medicinal, perfumery and food value, is the presence of essential oils. There are some subtleties in growing monarda, but having mastered them, you will not only admire beautiful and fragrant plants for 5-6 years, but also derive very real practical benefits.
For garden plots, it is better to grow seedlings either in boxes or on a small patch of land under a film, and then transplant them to a bed with a distance of at least 30-50 cm between plants, since each plant turns into a powerful "bush" with 15-20 shoots a meter high. The seeds do not require stratification, they sprout in 7-10 days, the seedlings take root well.
No less popular is another method of propagation - dividing the bush, so friends or neighbors can give you such an unusual gift, chopping an old bush into several parts with a shovel.
In folk medicine, monarda is used for stomach pain, for wound healing, for the treatment of bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis, various infections, as an antipyretic.
Infusion, juice, gruel from leaves and inflorescences help to tighten long-term non-healing wounds, ulcers, eczema, are used for acne, seborrhea, peeling skin. Of course, the main role in the healing effect of monarda is played by essential oils, which exhibit bactericidal, anthelmintic, antibiotic, immunomodulatory activity. And for the plant itself, essential oil is useful - it protects the plant from damage by pests and attracts pollinating insects.
And what a wonderful honey plant it is!
At the end of July, during the period of mass flowering of monarda, it seems that all the bees and bumblebees in the area have gathered on the site with monarda. You want to cut off a shoot, and it buzzes and moves ...
In addition to essential oils, monarda fistulosa contains other biologically active substances, for example, flavonoids, which also have a strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect.
Oil extract from July raw material of monarda exhibits antimicrobial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. It completely suppresses the growth of a number of dangerous representatives of pathogenic microflora. This list includes Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus and Enterobacter
You can also prepare oil extract at home by taking dry monarda herb and refined vegetable oil in a ratio of 1:10 and heating this mixture in a water bath for 2-2.5 hours at a temperature of 55-60 degrees. Filter and use to treat wounds or instill into the nose, but first make sure that you and your children are not allergic to monarda.
